The Canberra Zoo and Aquarium
The acoustic team of The Silky Six – aka SILK – performed at the Canberra Zoo and Aquarium. We set up at the end of the “cat walk” which is where you view all of the big cats – in this case – white lions! It was a pretty cool place to perform! We had our first captive audience… (sorry).
Some of the white lions at the Canberra Zoo watching the performance (sort of…)
As you can see, the interest factor from the inmates was pretty slim but we thought it was great that they were so close!
Catering was provided by Coyote Catering and the food was amazing. Our only complaint was that we didn’t get to eat a lot as we were “on the job”. If you check out their website, you’ll note that they have won awards for catering three years in a row. SILK are not surprised.
The Canberra Zoo and Aquarium, the place to be this summer holidays!
Canberra turns it on for the fundraiser!
The Silky Six had a wonderful time entertaining guests at the AAACT Gala Night at the Rydges Lakeside in Canberra last night. It reminded us how fabulous a place Canberra really is! The rain came down in typical Canberra spring time fashion, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the night. The theme of the function was Bollywood and the costumes were outstanding! The room looked fabulous and thanks to the remarkable talent of Show Pony Events, this fundraiser should most certainly be deemed a success!
The Silky Six will be playing as a trio to celebrate Ronald McDonald House, Canberra, who are celebrating their first birthday next week. A function most certainly worth attending and a cause worth supporting. As a matter of fact, as I sit here and write this blog, McHappy day is happening around me. A fundraiser like this brings together the Canberra community and makes it a great place to live.
Canberra loves a good fundraiser, and not only do we love it, we do it well! With such beautiful surrounds it’s hard not to get out and about, enjoy the lake, enjoy the sun, enjoy the national treasures we have all around us, and take part in something for a bigger cause. So, keep it up Canberra! Get out there and show the world that we lead the way in helping everyone have a better quality of life!
Hope to see you at our next Canberra fundraiser!
Ever heard of a cover band groupie being 1?!
The Silky Six cover band wish to send out some very special birthday wishes to their youngest groupie: Indi.
Indi is a product of Valentine’s Day – we think – and belongs to band members David and Colette. Indi has attended every band practice for the last 2 years and loves to be involved in rehearsals! She can generally be found shaking a maraca, attacking a triangle, messing with the band equipment – mic leads are her favourite – or shaking her tambourine!
Music can be a great way for kids of all ages to learn and develop; from the age-old nursery rhymes generally sung with actions to match, all the way through to the dulcet tones of Bob Marley proving to be a calming influence on babies even under 12 months old…
After having Indi, band member Colette became interested in the effects music would have on her baby girl. Aside from noticing the immediate and obvious calming effects, Colette found a great deal of research to suggest that exposing a child to a wide variety of music could have a very positive effect on her baby’s growth and development. For more information, visit Music and Your Baby – just one of a number of sites offering interesting information on music and baby’s development!
Happy birthday Indi, the band thoroughly enjoys having you as a mascot!
Canberra wedding at the arboretum.
The first Canberra wedding The Silky Six performed at the arboretum was for Sam and Roger in November. Members of TS6 were thrilled to play at this function particularly for such an awesome couple. We received a really nice note on our Facebook page from the bride, Sam. We thought we’d share it!
“You guys were the bomb! Everyone at our wedding commented on how fantastic you were. We loved your energy, music everyone could dance to, and the songs you learnt for us. Thanks for sharing our night.”
The view from the arboretum is one of the reasons why this venue is so popular!
Check out the Facebook page for the friends of the Arboretum. There are over 1000 followers!

The Silky Six supports Autism and Asperger ACT gala dinner. This event will be held on November 8 2013.
The Silky Six wish AAACT all the best for this event!
What Is Asperger Syndrome?
Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) considered to be on the “high functioning” end of the spectrum. Affected children and adults have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviors. Motor development may be delayed, leading to clumsiness or uncoordinated motor movements. Compared with those affected by other forms of ASD, however, those with Asperger syndrome do not have significant delays or difficulties in language or cognitive development. Some even demonstrate precocious vocabulary – often in a highly specialized field of interest.
The following behaviors are often associated with Asperger syndrome. However, they are seldom all present in any one individual and vary widely in degree:
• limited or inappropriate social interactions
• “robotic” or repetitive speech
• challenges with nonverbal communication (gestures, facial expression, etc.) coupled with average to above average verbal skills
• tendency to discuss self rather than others
• inability to understand social/emotional issues or nonliteral phrases
• lack of eye contact or reciprocal conversation
• obsession with specific, often unusual, topics
• one-sided conversations
• awkward movements and/or mannerisms
Autism is a communication disorder, with a broad range of affect. Some people’s autism makes them eccentric and geeky. Other people can’t speak at all, as a result of more severe autistic disability.

The Silky Six wish AAACT all the best for this event!
New desk for Canberra Wedding and Events Band!
Canberra wedding and events band The Silky Six recently branched out and purchased an Allen and Heath ZEDFX desk so that we can sound even better for our Canberra wedding and events audiences!…
Perfect for all our gigs be they duo or trio, and even all the way up to our full six piece Canberra wedding and events band glory, Allan and Heath ZEDFX makes for sweet sounds… This desk comes with a huge range of onboard effects and special features making it easy to use, easy to record, easy to listen to, and you can even plug straight in for the muso who doesn’t want any mess or fuss during set up and pull down! We’ve had a great time experimenting with sounds and effects, and believe we’ve got our levels set just right!
The Silky Six will use our new purchase for our upcoming gigs at Gunghalin Lakes – we’ll be playing some trio twilight sessions with covers for everyone to enjoy. We are also looking forward to using this desk for our couples choosing to get married at The Chapel in Gold Creek as we offer you the option of singing you down the aisle or entertaining your guests after your ceremony. Our new toy will be very busy in the coming months with a number of Corporate clients booking The Silky Six for their end of year celebrations.
If you haven’t heard this desk in action, be sure to come along to one of our gigs in the near future and find out why The Silky Six and Allen and Heath make us the most versatile Canberra wedding and events band!
Here’s a photo of our new toy, all set up for David, Colette and AJ to practice harmonies and set levels.
